How to manage to get time for sketching is one of the frequently asked questions by beginners and IF YOU ARE WILLING TO, YES you will always have time for it, and its a FIGHT against YOU and your Priorities and your habits of wasting time.
To become a skilled artist is everyone’s DREAM, and you need to lose something to gain something. Are you willing to lose? to Gain?
Professional artists were once a beginner and they haven’t become skilled overnight. They have built their habits by putting efforts with will power and planning their time for it. The best way to become a skilled artist is to practice it daily. Repetition is the key and also mindset will also play a role.
PLANNING & SCHEDULE
You should start by setting a fixed time to draw / Sketch every day. Don’t wait for free time, It will never happen. Be rigid on schedule and follow this honestly. Start with minimum time, like 30 min daily will be a good start. Later you can increase the time.
If you lacking in will power, I will recommend you to Prepare a Plan sheet as below and stick it on the wall. You will make “X” marks if it’s done for the day or mark as “Zero” if you couldn’t. This Visual planner has a strong effect on your will power to continue it.
When these visual planners pile up, every day and every month, They will make you feel proud of yourself and keeps you motivated and the same will be your habit. Hence planning and midset is everything to gain skills.
ORGANIZE AND BE RIGID
It’s the same way how the athletes will show there face every day for regular exercise to be fit and competitive.
Whatever may be the mood, circumstances you need to be rigid to the schedule and plan. If you miss doing one day by any chance, make sure you put one extra effort to compensate for the practice which was lost.
KEEPING A RECORD
Every professional artist has a sketchbook around, it will be a big part of being an artist as sketches generate ideas through your studies. Keeping a sketchbook will help you to see your improvements in your skills. It will be a record or documentation of your own journey, later which makes you motivated and makes you proud.
START SIMPLE BUT START NOW
It’s good to start something now rather doing nothing, Start with simple things, Like pencil sketching / drawing any subject. Try to understand fundamentals or basics better rather than advanced skills. there is nothing like advanced, it’s always a step ahead of one step, or pile-up of knowledge.
Start with simple sketchbook and pencil today.

Very true …. and simple ways of beginning are mentioned. I believe focus initially should be on getting inclined towards any hobby – Drawings definitely will make oneself feel lighter. A hobby, cultivating / upgrading it, reaching different levels is a experience altogether.
Most importantly a Guide will always keep a tab and improve the developments.
Kudos to JP Studio in reigniting the fire in many (including me)….
